MLS “Awards” – Goalkeeper of the Year
GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
There are no real stats to judge primarily defensive players. No goals, no assists, no saves to emplify how important these stoic rocks are to a team’s wins and loses. These –mostly– silent men are the bedrocks of their teams foundations.
How the Panel Voted:
What the Panel Said:
Chris Ballard: Without [Stefan Frei] between the sticks, Toronto’s season would have gone from “really bad” to “embarrassing”. (-ed note: there’s always Champions League.)
Abram Chamberlain: It may not have been spectacular saves with [Faryd Mondragon], but he shored up a very leaky Philadelphia defense. If keepers were looked at for MVP, he would probably be an MVP candidate.
Jason Davis: Kasey Keller had a fantastic year in his final season.
Robert Jonas: Kasey Keller [is] still getting it done in his last professional season, the soon-to-be 42 year old is retiring in style as the best goalkeeper in MLS.
Zac Wassink: Kasey Keller. Yeah, kind of a sentimental pick. His stats might surpriseyou, though.
